The Recording Connection audio school alternative combines the best aspects of formal schooling with on-the-job training to provide you with the kind of real-world preparation that employers are looking for.
RRFC Inc.’s industry-wide extern programs are:
- Recording. Externship positions in recording studios and record companies for the purpose of training the student to become a recording engineer or music producer. This program offers both bachelor and master equivalents in audio.
- Broadcasting. Externship positions in radio and television broadcasting facilities for the purpose of training the student for on-air or on camera positions as a DJ, news anchor or reporter, talk show host, sportscaster or voice-over personality.
- Film. Externship positions in film and video production companies for the purpose of training the student to become a director, producer, cinematographer, camera operator, or digital editor, as well as computer animation, special effects and other film and television positions.
Here’s how it all works: We connect local major recording studios, record companies, radio/TV Stations, video and film production companies with an aspiring talented extern, presumably you!
Why It Works
The mentored externship method helps abolish that old catch-22: “You can’t get a job without experience, and you can’t get experience without a job.” By getting you in the door from the very beginning, we enable you to get on-the-job experience while you are externing, so by the time you graduate, you already have an advantage over audio students from other schools!
We also recognize that it’s not only what you know, it’s also very much who you know. “Who you know” is the unquestioned overwhelming influencing factor in employment. We believe that on-the-job training in the real world is a great way to learn and build industry contacts in-tandem.
Who Trains You
If accepted into a Recording Connection program, you will receive a structured course curriculum, just like you would at any college or university program. The difference is that your instructor in our mentor/extern program will not be a college professor, or a teacher but rather, the head or a key professional within the actual recording studio where you are training. This is the same person who is in a position to hire you — or get you hired — once you complete the training!
The employment edge gained through the Recording Connection is in large part due to the fact that the training is always done one-on-one. One student extern is trained by one mentor, an audio professional with years of recording experience to pass onto you.
A mentor is a professional in the field that you choose–in this case, he/she is a music producer, chief engineer or studio owner of a local recording studio. Your mentor is the same person who from time to time has to hire assistant engineers.
Think about it from the mentor’s viewpoint: How much easier is it to hire your own private student extern, whom you have personally groomed and taught on-the-job, than a recent college graduate whom you don’t even know?
Why Recording Connection Costs Less
Tuition at traditional recording and music schools can run from $25,000 to over $80,000. Colleges and universities are even more expensive. In addition, attending often means you have to move to another area, which involves travel costs, housing, etc.
The reason that our mentor/extern program is so inexpensive by comparison is that the studio, building and equipment are already in place. Because we have no separate campus or equipment to maintain, the only cost is for your instructor, text material, school supervision, student services advisor, and hardware/software.
Not For Everyone
The very nature of the on-the-job training process requires us to select our students based on employment standards, rather than school admissions standards. In short, we’re looking for people who can become good, reliable employees. No previous experience is required; the important thing is that you possess the qualities any employer looks for: attitude, motivation, dedication, and punctuality.
There is no age limit for our programs. Most of our students are between the ages of 18-35, but we welcome people of all ages. Acceptance is by personal interview, at a major recording studio in your local area! Working Around YOUR Schedule
Because these mentor/extern programs take place one-on-one they can accomodate various schedules, even if you work full-time, have kids, or other responsibilities to consider. Thus, you can’t use that old excuse that you don’t have the time to do what you have always wanted to do.
